Walmart return policy
Most Walmart purchases can be returned within 90 days, in store, at curbside, or by mail, but electronics, phones, and appliances have much shorter windows.

The short version

- Walmart can look up store purchases from the card you paid with, and online orders from your phone number or email. With no receipt and no lookup, you must show government photo ID and the refund comes as a Walmart gift card, if the return is accepted. Walmart suggests keeping the receipt and packaging for at least 90 days, and your Walmart.com purchase history shows the exact last return date for each item.
- Refund goes
- Back to the original payment method. Cash and check purchases are refunded in cash. Debit card returns can also be paid in cash or gift card. No-receipt returns get a Walmart gift card.
- Refund timing
- Cash is immediate. Credit and debit card refunds take up to 7 days, or up to 10 business days if there was no receipt. Walmart Balance, gift card, Walmart Cash, and EBT refunds land within about 3 hours.
- Return shipping
- Free for items sold by Walmart: curbside or in-store drop-off with no printing or repackaging, or a mailed label from the app. Marketplace sellers may not refund return shipping.

How to return it
- 1Open your purchase history in the Walmart app or on Walmart.com and select Start a return.
- 2Pick the items and a reason, then choose store, curbside, or mail.
- 3Review the refund summary, submit, and check your email for the confirmation and barcode.
- 4Bring the item with all original packaging and accessories to Customer Service or a curbside pickup spot, or drop the labeled box at FedEx.
What catches people out
- Anything with a rechargeable battery, like tools, laptops, and e-bikes, must come back with the original battery or it will be refused.
- Major appliances have only 2 days, and phones only 14.
- Freight, oversized, and heavy items cannot be returned to a store at all; they go back by freight shipping.
- Items you assembled, like furniture, grills, and bikes, must be fully taken apart and repackaged before a store or FedEx will take them.
- Without a receipt you need government photo ID, the refund is a gift card, and Walmart can decline the return after its verification check.
- Alcohol, tobacco, gift cards, trading cards, and ammunition are never returnable.
- Items bought from a dealer or reseller rather than Walmart itself cannot be returned to Walmart.
- Only items from the same order can go in one return box; mixing orders delays the refund.
- Cross out the original shipping label on the box or the refund can be delayed.
- Items bought with WIC or SNAP can only be exchanged for the same item, not refunded for cash or gift card.
